78 – The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I saw the first Twilight and to be honest felt it was just a vampire film aimed at teenage girls.  I wasn’t really expecting the second part “New Moon” to be any different, and funnily enough it wasn’t.  In this part of the saga the vampire dude Edward leaves his human love, Bella (which means he isn’t in the film much which must have caused a whole lot of upset amongst the little girls who seem to adore him!) and she sulks about it.  But then her mate Jacob proves to be a love interest and as if we hadn’t guessed from the first part he turns out to be a werewolf!

I don’t really care if I give any spoilers away for this film, it’s over two hours long and isn’t really worth seeing…but if you really do want to see it then you might like to skip the next paragraph.

So in the first part she was chased by vampires and Edward killed the evil vampire guy.  Well his missus wants to kill Bella to get her revenge.  So we’re kinda expecting a big fight with her, but it never appears, she does a bit of stalking but nothing happens – guess that’ll be in the next part.  This part focusses more on the werewolves I guess.  Anyways, The Cullen’s come back and Bella pleads with them to turn her.  The wolf dude Jacob is heartbroken and reminds Edward about the treaty which if he turns her he’d break.  They of course leave it with an unanswered question at the end.

Honestly these films are a huge bore for me, nothing about them to really keep me interested, but Mrs. T loves them so I expect I’ll end up having to see the next part, I think it was called “Eclipse” or something.  I cannot say I am looking forward to it though.  I’ve seen much better vampire and werewolf movies…honestly this will never be as good as The Lost Boys – that film has classic value!

77 – Watchmen

Monday, March 29th, 2010

This film was very long, let’s get that out of the way, around 2 and a half hours, I didn’t expect it to be that long.  I am not moaning about the time, more the fact that it didn’t seem to need to be that long or go anywhere.  It’s a superhero thing and they’ve all retired and been in hiding it seems until one of their own is mudered.  It’s set in an alternate 1985 and it’s all very darkly filmed.  They are forced to investigate what’s going on and start to team up once again.  It’s hard to say if I actually enjoyed this movie, I didn’t disklike it put it that way, but after 2 and a half hours I am wondering why they didn’t tell that story in 90 minutes, they could have quite easily.  I’d heard good things about Watchmen, but to me it was just another movie, no real oustanding features, the storyline was very run of the mill too.  I am glad I watched it, but don’t expect I’ll bother watching it again.

76 – Princess Protection Program

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Don’t judge me!  I like films like this that leave you not having to really think about them, they’re light hearted and really easy to watch.  So this movie tells the story of a Princess who is under threat and stays with an agent who just saved her and his daughter.  Obviously in typical fashion they don’t like each other and obviously end up being best friends.

75 – Pocahontas

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Obviously not my choice, but it’s my eldest daughter’s birthday and she wanted to watch Pocahontas before bed, so fair enough.  A Disney animation which tells the story of a colony who are invaded by the English.  Damn us English!  The chief has promised his daughter to the greatest warrior but of course she doesn’t like that.  She meets ons of the English and falls for him.  They need to prevent a war and keep their love a secret.  A classic Disney take on a tale, not one of my favourite Disney movies, but it’s OK.

74 – Nuns On The Run

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

I found one of those “free with a newspaper” DVD’s behind some others and it was this classic film, Nuns On The Run.  Having not seen this movie for years it seemed like a good time to watch it again.  Starring Eric Idle & Robbie Coltrane as two crooks trying to quit the gang they’re in, the boss finds out and plans to kill them.  But they get away with the cash and they end up having to disguise themselves as nuns.  Some cheap laughs, fun enough but I guess there is a reason I see this film like once every ten years.

73 – I Love You, Man

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Mrs. T had been looking forward to seeing this movie for a while and let’s be honest, it didn’t disappoint.  I guess it was pretty obvious but was packed with laughs and I really enjoyed this film.

Basically Paul Rudd is getting married and realises he has no friends, the story follows his trying to meet a friend and then meeting Jason Segel.  Some well funny scenes and this is a great comedy film.  Seriously enjoyed this movie!

72 – Lesbian Vampire Killers

Friday, March 26th, 2010

OK I admit I had heard in advance that this film was terrible, but of course I had to watch it just to see how bad it is.  And also the fact it’s James Corden and Matt Horne of Gavin And Stacey fame meant it had to be seen really.

The loose storyline is that the two of them decide to go hiking to help one of them get over a break up.  They end up meeting some girls and unearthing an ancient legend of vampires, who as the film title would suggest are all lesbians.  They are trying to bring their leader back to life and would you believe it, Matt Horne is the long lost descendent they need, I mean come on, what are the chances?  Corden teams up with a crazy vicar and they set about to rescue the others and stop the lesbian vampire ruler coming back to life.  There are loads of cheap gags, now I do enjoy those amusing innuendos, so that’s always a plus.  I just hope Corden & Horne didn’t think the film was going to be a huge success, cult classic if it’s lucky, but probably not.  Filmed in a style very like the classic Shaun Of The Dead, I think they were really trying to cash in a bit.  And the worst part is they even set it up for a sequel…I’m not sure they’ll bother though.  If they did I’d probably be sad enough to watch it when it came on Sky Movies.  Overall it’s really not the best film I’ve seen – it was worth checking just cause James Corden has some really good lines and makes the film.  I can’t see me watching it ever again.  But for 80 minutes it kept me entertained enough.

71 – Vice Versa

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

I have to admit that I love this movie.  A classic if you ask me from the 80’s.  Starring Fred (The Wonder Years) Savage and Judge (Beverly Hills Cop) Reinhold as a father and son who swap bodies.  Yes this has been done in loads of films, obviously Freaky Friday – but ya know what it’s still a fun movie.  One of the better 80’s movies.  Both plays their roles really well and you just can’t help but enjoy this film.

Briefly they stumble upon an artefact and they swap bodies and loads of mayhem follows as they try to cope with each other’s life.  Obviously this being an American family film the ending is going to a happy one as they make changes for the better.  Well worth checking out if you haven’t already seen it.

70 – A Simple Wish

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Another family movie this one.  Starring Martin Short as a the only male fairy Godmother.  He’s a total clutz and misses the annual fairy Godmother convention.  Lucky he did really as Kathleen Turner is evil and takes all the wands, but obviously doesn’t get his.  Meanwhile he’s managed to mess a wish up and turn the girl’s Dad into a statue.  This family film follows them trying to fix the problems he’s caused and save the other fairy Godmothers.  It’s pretty obvious, but for a bit of fun, it’s harmless enough.  Hardly ground breaking and minimal on the laughs for adults, but nothing wrong with this movie really.  I have to admit I like these films better when they add in references for the older viewers to get.  But it kept me entertained enough for the 84 minutes it ran for.  Just good clean family fun mixed with a bit of magic!

All Time Greats……

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

So on this site I’ve been putting a list of the movies I’ve watched during 2010 and I will continue to do so.  But I realised how I haven’t actually listed some of my favourite movies on here, so thought I would.  If you read this, then good on ya!  Feel free to post comments on these movies and more.

I’ll try and drop them into categories to make it that little bit easier.
First up the rather obvious sci-fi category which would of course be headed up by Star Wars (A New Hope), Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi.  Three great movies that meant so much to me when I was growing up.  I remember when my Dad came back from a business trip and bought me a present, which was a rather awesome Boba Fett figure.  Many hours of Star Wars love followed, much money would have been spent on Star Wars toys and merchandise (and still is to be fair!).  I know people lots of people cannot decide in which order these films should be as their favourite.  I just love them all!  Although not so much when Boba Fett gets swallowed by the Saarlac pit in ROTJ.  Other great sci-fi films for me would not be the obvious 2010 / Close Encounters, but E.T.  A great film if you ask me, loved it as a kid and still totally do!

Next we’ll move onto sports related movies.  I do enjoy films with a sporting theme, my favourite would have to be Escape To Victory though.  A classic tale of a game between some POW’s and the German team, starring legends such as Pele, Bobby Moore, Michael Caine, Max Von Sydow and oh yeah Sly Stallone.  Of course The Karate Kid & The Karate Kid II.  Other great movies for me would be the recently re-watched, Invincible and also We Are Marshall.  True stories and American Football related.  The Rocky movies (1-4 anyways!).  I love most sports films (yes even the Mighty Ducks ones!)

Action wise, you can’t look past Die Hard and Die Hard 2.  Great films and everytime they are on TV, I can’t not watch them once again.

Let’s have a think what else is there:  High Fidelity would have to be in there, of course The Goonies would be as well!  Then Kevin Smith stuff like Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy & Mallrats.  I think American History X is a powerful film too.  Shaun Of The Dead of course! “There is no I in team, but there is in meat pie, and meat is an anagram of team” – awesome!

Then there is my love of B-movies.  The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, the original King Kong, Clash Of The Titans, Jason And The Argonuats,  (yeah mostly Ray Harryhausen related – but the man is a genius!).  Japanese Godzilla movies – I could go on and on…

I know full well I have totally forgotten loads and loads of movies that I love in this list, so there could be a re-write at a later date….we’ll see!  OK sorry for the interruption…your normally scheduled program of short reviews of movies I’ve watched will return soon!
